BBI Founder’s Biography

Joseph Kanu is a dedicated leader, philanthropist, and father of five, based in Dallas, Texas. Born and raised in Sierra Leone, he relocated to the United States in 1997, seeking new opportunities for growth and development. His educational journey is a testament to his commitment to lifelong learning and personal advancement. In Sierra Leone, Kanu earned a Higher Teacher Certification from Milton Margai Teacher’s College, which enabled him to serve as a teacher for 11 years. Upon moving to the United States, he furthered his education, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources from Metropolitan State University and a Master of Arts in Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management from Southern Methodist University. In April 2024, Kanu completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Strayer University in Washington, further enhancing his leadership skills and philanthropic vision.
For 11 years, Kanu pursued a distinguished career in the United States Army, participating in notable operations such as Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. His service demonstrated his discipline, resilience, and leadership. Unfortunately, his military career was cut short when he was diagnosed with glaucoma, leading to his retirement in 2008. Despite undergoing several surgeries, Kanu eventually lost his vision entirely.
However, Kanu’s passion for service did not end with his military career. Instead, his personal experience with blindness fueled a new mission: to support and uplift individuals with disabilities, especially the visually impaired. In 2023, Kanu founded Barrier Breakers International (BBI), a nonprofit organization aimed at providing resources and support to individuals with disabilities, with a particular focus on those in West Africa. His goal is to serve his homeland by supporting children with disabilities, offering them a home, healthcare, and the tools they need to live independent lives. Kanu’s first-hand experience with visual impairment has given him a unique understanding of the challenges faced by people with similar conditions, inspiring him to advocate for their rights and empower them through BBI.

BBI is built on key pillars aimed at fostering independence and improving the quality of life for visually impaired individuals. The organization’s educational programs focus on equipping individuals with essential life skills, such as numeracy and daily living techniques, to help them become self-sufficient. Kanu is also a strong advocate for assistive technology, which includes devices and software designed to enhance accessibility and independence for the visually impaired. Additionally, he emphasizes the importance of building community support networks through mentorship and events, offering emotional support and guidance to those in need. His visionary approach to securing resources for BBI, including grants, individual donors, and corporate partnerships, reflects his commitment to ensuring the sustainability of the organization.
As a forward-thinking leader, Kanu is focused not only on addressing immediate challenges but also on driving long-term change for people with disabilities. His leadership is marked by a continuous dedication to innovation, inclusion, and transforming societal attitudes toward disability. He envisions a world where disability is seen as a form of diversity, not a limitation. Through his tireless efforts, Kanu seeks to dismantle the barriersfaced by the visually impaired, creating a more inclusive and supportive society.
Inspired by his personal journey of turning obstacles into opportunities, Kanu remains steadfast in his commitment to bettering the lives of those with disabilities. His deep compassion, resilience, and unwavering dedication have made him a beacon of hope for the individuals and communities he serves. Through BBI, Kanu continues to inspire others to embrace their potential and lead fulfilling, independent lives.
